About Me

How I moved from a theatre and film and television degree, to a teaching diploma, to a law degree, to becoming a commercial disputes lawyer for over ten years, to circling back to my roots by helping creatives, entrepreneurs and small businesses understand the legal side of their business.

The journey began with a love of acting. I completed a double major in theatre and film and television and a minor in journalism at Curtin University.

Eager to see the world, I travelled overseas for a year, teaching English as a second language to students in Europe (having completed a Cambridge certificate in teaching english as a foreign language). On my return to Australia, I undertook a Diploma of Education with a major in theatre and a minor in english literature.

During my Diploma, I was invited to participate in a pilot project at the Children’s Detention Centre in Perth, which involved teaching drama as a form of therapy to children. Overwhelmed at the high percentage of indigenous children in a maximum security prison system, I decided to study law.

In 2007, I completed my law degree and accepted a graduate position in a large commercial firm.

A year later, I received a dream role as a Research Associate to two Supreme Court of Appeal judges and went on to spend another year in the General Division of the Supreme Court with another judge. For me, the theatre of law is in the court room, so I was in my element spending all my time there!

From there, I went on to work for another large commercial firm, in a disputes team (ie, involved in large court matters), for many years. Having returned from a year of maternity leave in Scotland, I returned to the firm part time and also started my own small business in holiday rentals.

During the process of running my business, it became clear that there was a lack of access to legal information for small business owners, entrepreneurs and creatives. I therefore held a legal seminar for people in this space, which received enormously great feedback.

On my second round of maternity leave in Broome (WA), I began working with creatives and performing again (mostly in stand up comedy and story telling). I was also invited to be a guest speaker at a seminar in Perth for creatives, and once again spoke about legal matters relevant to their needs.

Upon reconnecting with my roots, these events and the further communications with people I met over the past few years, it cemented my belief that creatives, small business owners and entrepreneurs desperately needed legal information.

Therein lay the motivation for the birth of my online law course, Layman’s Law, which is dedicated to teaching the fundamentals of law in every day life in business.
